Free Trench Coat Pattern
I had a little *moment* when I stumbled across this Fabrics Store Lola Trench Coat pattern and just fell in love with the sleek, modern styleš I couldnāt believe it was free! Iāve had 3 yards of this shadow grey linen (idk why itās named that, itās for sure dusty pink lol) for months and was just waiting for the right project to cut into it.
This linen is super lightweight, which although not what I envisioned for a trench, I actually love because since the jacket is unlined, itās just a light layer, much more wearable casually than Iād thought itād be. A perfect extra summer jacket. The pattern teaches skills like flat-felled seams, single welt pockets, and narrow hemming.
Itās marked as an intermediate pattern and I think thatās accurate. Instructions are mostly pretty clear and have photos which is nice. I didnāt make a toile, just cut into the good fabric, and messed up pretty royally installing the welt pockets not only upside down BUT ALSO on the wrong side of the fabric on one side šš½šš½šš½ I was able to unpick it, stitch the pocket hole up and cut a new one, but it left a very ugly little seam still. Trying to turn my mistake into beauty, I added a little machine embroidery flower to hide it that matches the gold topstitching thread I used. In hindsight, I would do a matching pink if I did it again, but it did its job and is a nice little addition.
So PSA: practice welt pockets before just going for it š They give you an option to interface the welts, which I did, and then regretted because theyāre ugly on the wrong side and bulky in my light fabric, so I ripped most of that off. The pattern also says to use fusible web to attach the inner part of the front facing to the body which I donāt really like, itās not staying so well, so I may go back and slip stitch it to the body.
