All About ME2033: The Wave Set

Color-blocked. Wavy. Goodness. Enter the ME2033 sewing pattern from Know Me Patterns! The Wave Set, as I informally call it pattern number ME 2033, is a loud and fun outfit choice together, or great as individual pieces. It’s a pullover tank or cap sleeve crop top with a square neckline and barrel leg pants with side seam pockets and elastic at the back waistband. I loved this feature for a smooth look in the front but still getting the benefits of elastic pants!

I’ve been inspired by mashing colors together and different shapes and ways to color block garments, especially with linens. Some thoughts on choosing colors for this pattern below!

DESIGNED FOR
Confident beginners; sewing the curves takes a little patience! You’ll learn how to sew inseam pant pockets and a waistband with elastic in the back only.
FABRICS
The black/white and yellow/pink versions are both done up in medium weight linens. The white/teal version is done up in a sweatshirt fleece and french terry - this pattern works excellently for stable knits as well as wovens. I’d also suggest cotton twills, chambray, or french terry, or midweight fleece fabrics too.
SIZING
Goes up to a Hip 50in/127cm, bust 48”/122cm. Make sure to check the finished garment measurements on the back of the packet! I find that Know Me Patterns have more ease than I’m used to wearing, so although I measure at a size 12 squarely (b34 h36 w28), I cut and sew a size 10 or 8 depending on the fabric and how I want it to fit. As you cut your pattern pieces, it may help to also do a tissue fitting to check how the neckline lays on you- for some people, it is a bit wide, causing the straps to fall off the shoulders, and it has helped them to pinch a little bit of width out of the front and back neckline of the pattern pieces (and facing to match).

TIPS FOR CURVED SEAMS

Curves seams can be tough due to the amount of bias introduced (can lead to puckers or wavy seams if not careful). Here are some tips for sewing curved seams:

  • Mark the stitch line to get the shaping just right. The pattern has a 5/8 in seam allowance and I traced that on the wrong side of the contrast fabric. The wrong side is the part you see while stitching!

  • Pin the shit out of it to make sure nothing shifts in the process! I used a pin for every 1 cm or so on the curviest pieces but you can get away with less.

  • Go slowly and adjust your presser foot often to avoid puckering

  • Handle the curved edges carefully to avoid stretching these pieces. This is easy to do thanks to the bias of the curves. Consider stay stitching within the seam allowance before they are handled much.

  • Clip the curviest parts before sewing. I show visuals of this in my sewalong video. Pin, then clip into the seam allowance at the curviest parts, up to but not past the stitch line, then sew! This allows for some movement while sewing and relieves tension.

If you are having trouble with puckering after all of this - idk all of our fabrics are different!- consider reducing the seam allowance before sewing. The default is 5/8cm, but you could reduce it to 2/8ths or 3/8ths. Here’s a handy article that goes into a little more detail too if you need more. I also mention some tips in my youtube sew along video as well.

COLOR STORIES

I like to mix one bright color with one more muted or neutral color; mix a print for the contrast with a solid base color; or even mix different shades of a color together as the contrast options to one base color. There are a million ways to mix it! The effect is best when the contrast and main fabrics are two shades of the same type of fabric (like two medium-weight linens or two chambrays, or at least of similar weight.)
